Okayafrica Soundstage Hits DC This Friday

In the name of promoting the latest music and culture coming from the African  diaspora,  OKAYAFRICA DC continues this month on a new day with some out of town friends.  For this free event, the team deviated from just DJ sets and  included live music and artists. What you get from this mashup is the Okayafrica Soundstage, the first live segment in 4 years.

Heading up the lineup is Young Paris. Raised in NYC by world renowned Congolese performers, Young Paris crafts a unique sound that threads the boundary between rap and electronic dance music sampling heavily from traditional African drumbeats. Along with 5 of his brothers and sisters, he performs an exuberant live show that merges dance, performance art, and an unparalleled personal style.

Accompanying the vibes on the turntables, we are honored to have DJ Ushka. Ushka is a Sri Lankan-born, Brooklyn-based deejay. She is one half of iBomba, one of NYC’s premiere parties for global bass music. She is also a part of the music label, Dutty Artz, a collective of deejays and producers creating sonic cultural production and events in NYC and beyond.

Last but certainly not least we have The Freaky Baby Daddies to rock the house! The Freaky Baby Daddies are a Brooklyn-based indie-rock band that blends the alternative rock with undertones of world, afro-beat and reggae.

Resident spinner DJ Underdog will provide sounds that are mind-wide and foot-friendly, and  DJ Native Sun will accompany the mood with his bass heavy African remixes. Anything is fair game, but this Friday you will probably hear more South African House than normal! They'll paint the sonic wall with the best traditional and underground tracks from the motherland. Spread love!

PS. Afrobeat, kwaito, kuduro, zouk, soukous, azonto, kukere, coupe decale and hiplife are not exempt from this Fridays festivities. What will be lacking are pretensions, commercial radio nonsense, and egos.
