Today In Black History - Earl Lloyd

On this date in 1950, Earl Lloyd became the first African-American to play in an NBA game. The game was between the Washington Capitols and the Rochester Royals. Three other black players would play in the same season: Chuck Cooper, Nathaniel Clifton, and Hank DeZonie. While in college Lloyd led West Virginia State to two CIAA Conference and Tournament Championships in 1948 and 1949. The CIAA at that time was one of the best conferences in the country regardless of division and had some of the greatest black players ever play college ball. In 1947-48, West Virginia State was the only undefeated team in the United States.
