On this date in 1977 ABC began televising the Roots mini-series (which would go on to be the most watched mini-series in history), based on Alex Haley's book on his family's journey from Africa to America and their struggles in Pre-Emancipation America. The final episode became the third-most-watched TV program in history with at the time of its airing.
